Come Look At Gods Tree

Here at Christmas time we place a great deal of emphasis upon the tree or the trees that we place in our homes, as we celebrate the union of deity with humanity, in the virgin birth of our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ. There are some people who think the Christmas tree is pagan and do not want to have one. I think that is going quite a bit further than the Bible does about the matter. There is a spiritual message in the Christmas tree. The traditional colors of the tree are green and red. "Green" represents the continuance of life through the winter. That is why we use an "evergreen." Some trees like the oak or the poplar, lose their leaves and have the appearance of death in the winter. We use the evergreen to symbolize eternal life in the Lord Jesus Christ. "Red" (which we always decorate the tree with in some way)--speaks of the blood that Christ shed for sinners at His crucifixion. We also use holly, wreaths, and mistletoe and decorate them in red to help give the same message. It is said the first Christmas trees in America were placed by German settlers in the early 1800's in Pennsylvania. By the mid 1800's people were putting them up at Christmas all around the world. I know you ladies take a great deal of pride in your Christmas tree. You might invite some loved one or friend over and say, "I want you to take a look at my tree this year." The matter is seasonal with us, but God has the same tree all year long to bring the sinner to Himself, that tree being Calvary.

1 Peter 2:21-25 (King James Version)

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Start Over

A preacher I don’t know sent me an email the other day and within it was a poem call “Start Over” Man did I need that! My message tonight is just what we at Cornerstone, just what you and I as individuals need to do—Start over. How many times can you do that preacher? I was hoping you would ask! God hasn’t given up on you and He hasn’t given up on them either. Who is THEM? You know who them is—those people who have disappointed you, offended you, let you down, didn’t measure up to your expectations. Unless you start over and allow them to start over—You may find yourself with God’s hand on your throat.

Luke 15:11-24 (King James Version)

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

Matthew 18:21-35 (King James Version)

21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Priority One

Frightening statistics point to the breakdown of law, moral responsibility and even conscience in our world. What has gone wrong? What has happened to this enlightened world of ours? We don't have standards any more -- or even feel we should. I believe we need a fixed standard We need goals and limitations, a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. We need some dependable rules for right living. There is no better starting point for understanding right living than the 10 commandments.

Losing Jesus

Imagine Mary & Joseph’s concern. They had lost their son. But it is worse than that! How would they explain to God that they lost HIS Son? How did they lose Jesus? They supposed that they could go on their way and Jesus would follow. They supposed that He was with the group. They hadn’t being paying attention, they just became aware that He was not with them. They had gone a day’s journey, and at the end the day discovered, He was not there. How often does this happen? Danny Conn’s grandparents came home from church one night and when it was time to put the baby to bed, discovered they had the wrong child. They went to church with a baby boy and came home with a baby girl! On another occasion, they had a crowd over for Sunday dinner. Later that afternoon, everyone loaded up and they went to church. When church was over, they started rounding up kids and couldn’t find one. Grandma thought he rode with grandpa, and grandpa thought he rode with grandma. They found him at home asleep in bed. The next generation didn’t do much better. My uncle Ken and his wife got home from church one evening without their youngest son. They rushed back to church and found him still asleep on the pew. We can see how easy it is. But the real tragedy is that people today still lose Jesus. Not the way that Mary & Joseph lost Him. People are losing Him Spiritually...

Luke 2:40-52 (King James Version)
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Time Bandits

When it comes to asking the Best Question Ever, there is no more crucial arena than that of time. Your time equals your life. You can run out of money and still have some time left. You can run out of friends with time to spare. But once you run out of time, it’s over.
